Multiped

Introduction

Founded in 2023, Multiped LLC develops modular embedded hardware-software platforms for robotics and cyber-physical systems. To meet the growing demand for affordable, flexible, and research-ready solutions, the company addresses the shortcomings of rigid hardware designs, exorbent costs, and weak hardware-software integration. The Biped platform, Multiped's inaugural product, is a two-wheel self-balancing robotic platform powered by ESP32 and equipped with advanced sensing, actuation, modular firmware, and ground station software. Designed to support both ground and aerial chassis, Biped has already been adopted in the CS 431 Embedded Systems course at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where more than 40 students each year learn to build from low-level drivers to high-level controllers and planners. Expanding upon this foundation, Multiped is advancing a next-generation modular architecture with swappable hardware modules for compute, sensing, power, and expansion. This roadmap enables researchers, educators, and developers to configure platforms tailored to their needs. Founded by two graduate students from the University of Illinois with expertise in embedded systems, control, robotics, and machine learning, Multiped draws on a strong track record of academic publications, NASA-funded research, and system design. With this background, the team is positioned to deliver versatile platforms that bridge education, research, and innovation.
